It is useful to make a distinction between substrate particles and stratum particles. (See figure.) Stratum particles are superimposed on a substrate. They are more or less freely moving particles unless they happen to be part of the substrate of a lower-ranked universe.
Substrate particles are densely packed in a substrate. They do not move freely, although they can be highly energetic.
